Paul Klemperer. Born in Boston, MA, Paul discovered jazz at an early age, sneaking into smokey clubs by age 13. He studied with jazz legends Archie Shepp, Max Roach and Ray Copeland before moving to Austin, TX in 1982 where he worked with a long list of Texas artists including Marcia Ball, Doyle Bramhall, Delbert McClinton, Seth Walker, Nick Curran, Graham Reynolds and many more. As a bandleader, Paul performs in Texas regularly, and tours internationally.
With a degree in Ethnomusicology from the University of Texas, plus 20 years in international touring, Paul’s musical expertise crosses many boundaries, including western classical, jazz, blues, Latin, rock, R7B, Afrobeat, Balkan, North Indian, and much more. This broad range of musical influences led him to form three bands (and produce five CDs) which feature his original compositions: Manteca Beat, My Exotic Other, and The Klemperer Group.
Paul teaches private and group classes in clarinet, saxophone, flute, as well as classical and jazz theory. He also gives workshops, masterclasses, and lecture demos on issues in contemporary music and culture.
In addition to musical subjects, Paul writes essays, short stories, poetry and blogs with a variety of themes, including travel, popular culture, media, science fiction, martial arts, history, and philosophy.
